Istanbul, the only city in the world located on two continents. People visit while on a short city break, but the size and history of this world-renowned destination would warrant monthly stays to explore fully, all the things to do in Istanbul.
If you only have, days or a week, it is impossible to see all the sites so we have listed the most popular tourist attractions here. Sightseeing in Istanbul is an exciting experience and the only choice, you have to make is which attraction you should visit first.
Galata Tower and Bridge
The first site on our list of things to do in Istanbul is the impressive Galata Bridge and tower, both famous landmarks of Istanbul. The bridge rebuilt five times over the course of history; now features on many picture postcards, of which the most famous photo is the hundreds of anglers casting their rods over the side.
Underneath the bridge are traditional fish restaurants but the area is famous for the delicious fish sandwiches, sold as Turkish street food. Locals use Galata Bridge for business and leisure and it is a great introduction to Turkish life.
Galata tower dominates the skyline of this area, as one of the most visible landmarks. In the past, the tower was a lighthouse, fire tower and dungeon. It is open during the day but the highlights are the Turkish night shows held on the top floor.
Blue Mosque
Also known as, the Sultan Ahmed mosque, this historic building accommodates up to 10,000 people at prey time. It is over 400 years old and the largest mosque in Turkey. Twenty thousand ceramic tiles decorate the inside and over 200 stained glass windows let natural light into the main building. Out of all the mosques to see in Istanbul, this is the biggest and best.
Hagia Sophia
This dominant and important building has a colorful history as a church and mosque. Now a museum, Islamic calligraphy displayed on large, circular signs adorns the walls. The Hagia Sophia is one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture.
Topkapi Palace
This palace was once the home for the proud rulers of the Ottoman Empire. Many relics from this famous dynasty are on display within Topkapi palace and a stroll within the grounds is a great introduction to this empire that once dominated a considerable part of the globe.
Also within the grounds are the clock and sword of the prophet Muhammad. Topkapi Palace is an extensive and impressive building that joined the list of UNESCO world heritage sites in 1985.
Bosphorus Cruise
Considered a leisure activity, a cruise of the Bosphorus highlights the city from a different angle. The houses of millionaires adorn the coastline along with ancient castles, palaces and bridges. The Bosphorus has played an important part in the history of Istanbul, especially during world war one and a cruise is the perfect introduction.
Basilica Cistern
Beneath the city are several hundred cisterns of which the Basilica cistern is the most famous. Featured in the 1963 James Bond film, “From Russia with love”, it became a major tourist attraction. Most peculiar relics are the upside down heads of Medusa, used to hold up columns at the back of the interior.
Grand Bazaar
To get your adrenaline rushing and to practice your bargaining techniques, a visit to the grand bazaar is ideal. It is one of the largest covered markets in the world with over 60 streets to explore and 5000 shops. First opened in 1461, it receives over 25,000 visitors a day. If you are not sure of your bargaining techniques, our tour guide gives some great lessons on how to grab that perfect bargain.
Princess Islands
If city life gets too hectic, the Princess islands will restore your energy. It is historically a destination with homes for the rich and famous as well as exiled members of the Ottoman Empire. No traffic uses the roads apart from the traditional horse and cart, and if you have to pick one out of the nine islands, we recommend our tour to Buyukada.
Dolmabahce Palace
If you want see riches and grand décor, beyond your wildest dreams, a tour of the Dolmabahce palace is the place to do it. 14 tons of gold, cover the ceilings and 131 handmade silk carpets decorate the palace, which was home to rulers of the Ottoman Empire after they decided that the Topkapi palace was just not grand enough for them!
Museums
It is hard to pick just one museum, as they are all grand, impressive and display various relics and artifacts. We have two favorites though. The Istanbul modern art museum is for those who are artistically inspired while the afternoon show at the military museum highlights one thousand years of Turkish military history
